Hello, I’m Fred Aikens, a Democrat running for the Office of State Auditor. While this campaign is my first run for elective office, I have more than 28 years experience working in the public sector with oversight and management responsibilities in two of the largest agencies in State Government. I know the operations of State Government and believe we need a State Auditor who will not only audit the financial columns but also help the Executive and Legislative Branches improve the performance of State Government. “The taxpayers demand this”.

As State Auditor, I will increase the number of performance audits of agencies and intensify our efforts to identify wasteful and inefficient operations. I will create a special team of auditing professionals who can assess the operations of state agencies, identify inefficiencies, and help agency officials restore accountability. My top priority will be to ensure transparency, accountability, and responsibility to our State Government and the tax dollars that it spends. I will report directly to the people of North Carolina and the General Assembly.

This is going to be a long, hard fought campaign and it’s going to be a battle, but I know how to fight. As a retired Army Colonel in the North Carolina National Guard, I’ve seen a lot of action. I’m not afraid of a good, fair fight, especially if it’s on behalf of our taxpaying citizens and designed to root out waste, fraud, and abuse.

Making sure our tax dollars are spent wisely and work well in programs passed by our lawmakers will be the cornerstone of my service. I will make sure that the books balance, that the people aren’t swindled, and there is the highest level of confidence and accountability in every state department, division, agency, and program.
